HOW TO FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE WITH TECH

Tech Tip

these programs are built to be user friendly, but sometimes the people building them don’t realize they made their platform confusing…

FIRST OFF TAKE A DEEP BREATH!

these programs are built to be user friendly!
You are not confused or lost you’re just learning something new – which can feel overwhelming when all you want to do is focus on your business.
Sometimes the people building them (developers) don’t realize they made their platform confusing for you! So tell them!

YOU ARE PAYING FOR A SERVICE if they aren’t going to provide customer support then maybe they don’t deserve your business…but you CAN figure this out.

Take some time – no pressure to get anything specific done and just explore…
Its like say you are visiting a new city – and you have to be somewhere by 2pm and you’re freaking out because even though you have the gps its not helping you navigate these 5 lane highways and complicated roundabouts and on top of that you’re stressed your going to be late and you’re overthinking what’s going to go down at said 2pm meeting…

But what if you arrived a day early and just took some time to explore…just drive around town and discover some new places and see what this location has to offer… and eventually make your way to your destination…then when you do need to get there…you’re already an old pro – you could give directions to your colleagues now!

So all that to say – get in your new platform and just start clicking around – open links in new tabs click every button, see what each thing that interests you does…everyone learns differently too…so maybe hands on is too much right away… in that case just take your time and look for tutorials or videos on how to do a certain task on your platform – I’d be hardpressed to find a platform where NO ONE has made a how to or video walk through of how to do something.

Accept frustration – its going to be annoying at times – that’s just tech. I get frustrated OFTEN doing my job – whether its pointless repetition or having to redo something you JUST did or playing the password circus – you know where you have to reset your password to some email you’ve not touched in years so that you can gain access to the OTHER email that has your password reset link for this one platform you KNOW beyond a shadow of a doubt you’ve entered correctly!!!! SOOOO ANNOYING the password circus is the bane of my existence haha!

But yeah just accept that sometimes things aren’t going to work right and you’re going to get annoyed and that’s okay it happens to EVERYONE and you aren’t alone, you’re not the only one and that doesn’t mean that you’re incompetent!

So many people I talk to, especially solopreneurs, say sorry I’m technologically challenged NO YOU AREN’T!!!!! I promise you’re doing just fine. Maybe all you really need is to shift your mindset to thinking you ARE tech savvy and you CAN figure this new platform out!

And before I give you my real main tips on how to be more comfortable with tech I want to mention these two things:

Not everything on every platform is meant for you to use – for example kajabi has an email contact record management system where you can send email campaigns right from kajabi and capture leads that way – well maybe you already use flodesk or active campaign and that’s all set so in your case you wouldn’t need to explore their email marketing tab. It’s like having a really awkward cabinet space in your kitchen, just don’t keep anything there if its hard to get to and you have a better home for your stand mixer!

Or maybe in active campaign, for example, maybe you don’t need to use their automation system – maybe that’s just too much for you to deal with trying to explore and figure out while you’re in the middle of everything else – that’s okay! Table it – there’s nothing wrong with only using part of a platform if the part that you’re using makes sense to you! Not all all-in-one programs do everything perfectly – they are just trying to add value for their customers and that doesn’t mean you have to learn every aspect of it!

Platforms are meant to work together!!!!
So many platforms have built in integrations meaning they natively within themselves have connected to eachother! Developers LOVE to share their programs and knowledge! And if they don’t natively integrate with other platforms you probably can connect it with this awesome platform called zapier! They have a free version!

Okay now for my two tips – yep – just 2!
1. Save – save your work
2. Test – test to make sure everything looks and acts the way you want it to
That’s it.

Save your work. Save your writing or your ideas maybe even paste it in a google / word document or print it out – whatever way makes sense for you – save it AKA: back up your stuff! That way if something happens like you get caught in that password circus or your computer crashed/power goes out etc. you still have your content and ideas.
Test – and test again, and send it to someone else to test with fresh set of eyes (and fingers, and browsers and devices!) LOL

So what testing means is this: when you set something up, lets say you wrote a sales email or even a sequence of emails – then make sure that you not only send a test to yourself, but that you sign up for that email list/segment that’s supposed to get the email and you go through the entire customer journey – that way you can see what they see – I always recommend my clients to open a private browser and use a separate email and see what it looks like from the perspective of a customer, and a bonus to doing this is you may find notes and ideas to add to your campaign!

Or if you’re working on a landing page or an offer page or a payment gateway, open in an incognito or private browser or on an entirely different device, use a different email address to sign up than the one associated with the platform you’re working with and bam: go through the process of signing up and make sure you are getting everything you want your customers to get!

I guess there is a 3rd step… that’s troubleshooting – which is a fancy word for – go back and do it again step by step until you find out where the problem is, google it, watch youtube videos, test different ways and options of setting it up until it works. That’s literally it. That is a different discussion for a different day! First just dip your toe in the water!
